What’s popular: ‘Among Us’
September 29, 2020
Among Us has been a very popular game lately. If you aren’t with the trends, Among Us is an online multiplayer social deduction, or murder mystery, game. You are either a crewmate or an impostor. The crewmates must do their tasks and try to survive while the impostors have to try to eliminate everyone without getting caught. The crewmates work together to try and figure out who the impostors are, so they can be ejected from the ship in an attempt at victory. It’s easy to understand why everybody is so crazy about it. It’s very simple 2D play style is easy on the eyes and a break from the next 4K ultra HD triple A titles. Its simplicity is perfectly balanced with how serious the situation feels.
Once a body is reported, players discuss who could be the impostor. After a discussion period, everyone votes for who they think was the impostor. Players can also choose to skip voting if they aren’t sure who to vote for. Whoever gets the most votes will be ejected from the spaceship. Depending on your settings, the game will then tell you if that person was the impostor or not.
There’s also a feature where players can call an emergency meeting if they feel they’ve discovered the imposter but haven’t found a body to report. This brings up the same discussion and voting that happens when a body is discovered.
Another fun feature of the game is that you can customize your little astronaut with hats, pets, and clothes to make yourself unique. Most clothes and hats are free on the desktop version, but pet packs can be purchased for $2.99. Cosmetics cost more on mobile, but that’s a fair trade for the game itself being free.
The real fun of Among Us doesn’t start until you actually get into a game and get to debate with other players about who the impostor is. Some games will be taken very seriously, while others will be full of players who just want to mess around and have a good time. While getting voted out simply for “being sus” is irritating, the game itself is full of endless hours of fun.
While it seems like a very new game, Among Us has actually been around for around two years. The game’s recent popularity can be attributed to Twitch streamers and YouTubers, as well as memes centered around the game. Fans of the game will be very happy to hear that an Among Us 2 is currently in production. Here’s to hoping that Among Us 2 will revive just as much love as it’s predecessor has in recent weeks.
If you want to play Among Us you can find it available for free on iPhone and Android, as well as for $4.99 on Steam.
