The NBA is still playing games through the pandemic and people are excited about having live sports like NBA back on TV and they have been watching. People are also watching what is going on in this country with all the protests. The NBA made a statement after the May 25th death of George Floyd when an officer knelt on the black man’s neck for nearly nine minutes. People from all across the country started to protest on May 26th even known faces as in rappers, celebrities, and even sports stars.

Sports stars took to social media and spoke on the incident that took place on that day and spoke on how they felt.  NBA players started to go out and even lead in the protest like Malcom Brogdon who was one who took part. He even spoke on the situation on May 30th which racked up a lot of views and opened the eyes of thousands.

After months passed, the NBA and other sports began back on July 30th. Things were going well and they were ready to start the playoffs on August 17th. We were getting pretty deep into the first round when the hearts of many players were crushed they heard about the killing of 29-year-old Jacob Blake, who was killed on August 23rd in Kenosha,WI after being shot in the back by police as he was trying to get in his car.

When many of the NBA players heard about this shooting, they spoke out. NBA veteran LeBron James said, “We are scared as black people in America,” a few days later tweeting “WE DEMAND CHANGE.”

Then the coach of the Los Angeles Clippers Doc Rivers spoke out and said, “We’re the ones getting killed. We’re the ones getting shot. We’re the ones that were denied to live in certain communities. We’ve been shot. And all you do is keep hearing about fear. It’s amazing to me why we keep loving this country, and this country does not love us back. I should just be a coach. I’m so often reminded of my color. It’s just really sad. We’ve got to do better but we have to demand better.”

After this all took place and things were said, on August 26th, it was during the Milwaukee Bucks vs. Orlando Magic game that the Bucks boycotted the game. Orlando was out on the court ready to play but the Bucks were nowhere to be seen. Minutes later the announcers reported that the Bucks were not coming out of their locker room. The Bucks didn’t come out because they were boycotting the game due to the killing of Jacob Blake.

The Bucks players said they were calling for justice for Jacob Blake and demanded officers to be held accountable. The past four months have shed light on the ongoing racial injustices facing our African-American communities. Citizens around the country have used their voices and platforms to speak out against these wrong doings…as a result, despite the overwhelming plea for change, there has been no action, so our focus today cannot be on basketball.”

Later that day, the Los Angeles Lakers and the Portland Trailblazers played. Everybody wanted to see what LeBron James, the face of the NBA, had to say. In an interview after the game he said “I’m liking that I’m starting to see change, and we got it by demanding it. Hopefully I can see more.”

All- in-all I’m starting to like how the demand for change is coming along.
