Doctor Sleep: Does It Live Up To The Book?
November 18, 2019
Stephen King’s Doctor Sleep is one of my favorite books. You can imagine my excitement when I found out that a movie based on the book was in production. I was especially excited to see the film as it also acts as a sequel to The Shining movie from 1980.
When I first saw the casting for the movie I was somewhat disappointed. Many of the characters were different from the book. However, after seeing the movie my opinion changed drastically. The entire cast did an amazing job with their roles. Ewan McGregor fits the role of Dan Torrance perfectly. I found myself especially impressed with Kyliegh Curran, the 13-year-old actress who plays Abra Stone. She gave an incredible performance for such a young actress and I enjoyed how she portrayed the character of Abra.
The plot, however, is a different story. I went in expecting a lot and came out of the theatre slightly disappointed. In the second half, the movie completely derails from the book. The plot is changed to create a better sequel to The Shining movie. As someone who has read the book, I had no idea what was going to happen next. In the film, Dan Torrance dies just like his father in The Shining by the boiler in the Overlook Hotel exploding. This creates an emotional ending for the film but differs greatly from the book where he survives. I didn’t like this change, as well as many of the other changes from the book.
If you liked The Shining or like horror movies I’d recommend this film. The movie Doctor Sleep is a great psychological thriller. It has outstanding special effects, top-notch casting, and is a must-see. If you’ve read the book, go in knowing that it’s completely different, but have an open mind. Sit back and enjoy the ride.
