Boys Golf Finish A Great Season!
September 29, 2019
The Massillon Tigers Boys golf team had one of its best seasons in school history ending the year with a 13-5 record. The Tigers began the season going 5-0 defeating Northwest twice, Dalton, Firestone, and St. Thomas Aquinas.
According to head coach Josh Sykora, this is the best start since 1997, and maybe in the best start in history. The team also tied a 12 year low score of 165 set last year.
“They’ve performed very, very well,” Sykora said. “I’m very happy with how hard they’ve worked and their scores are reflecting the work they’ve put in.”
A major part of the team’s success could be attributed to technology. In their new studio, which they practiced in extensively over the winter is a brand new golf simulator which rivals or surpasses the capabilities of many colleges’ golf facilities. In fact earlier in the year local golf pro, Justin Lower, visited the simulator to help get it ready for the team.
“The new studio along with the dedication of the boys in the off-season has been the key,” Sykora said.
The team was lead by junior captain Nate Albrecht. “He has really stepped up to be the low man on the score sheet on a weekly basis,” Sykora said. Other leaders on the team included senior TJ Harper, who is a four-year letter-winner, senior Kaleb Carey, juniors Zac Turskey, Cameron Wright, and Gavin Blaylock, sophomore Trent Marsh, and freshman Benito Shoup.
